Brew Review #13
Pike Entire Wood-Aged Stout 2009
American Double Stout
Pike, Seattle, Washington, USA
I RATE THIS BEER: 91
RELEASE: Special One-off Production // THE ABV. 9.5% | IBU’s. 65 // THE NOSE: Black Olive Brine, Burning Wood, Dried Prunes, Sour Dill Pickle // THE TASTE: Oak, Kale, Espresso Beans, Kalamata Olive, Lox // THE BOTTOMLINE: Burnt wood for days (seriously, picture a forest fire) and briney acidity dominate the nose and flavor of this special barrel aged ale. Rich, charcoal bitter, a tad sour and packing some heat, there is little, if any sweetness... yet - some sweetness may come with aging. This brew comes wax sealed and really does have the muscle to last for many years. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a bottle or two, stash one away for at least five or six years and see what happens. // THE BACKBONE: A blend of Pike XXXXX Extra Stout and Pike Imperial Stout aged for 7 months in Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels, Pale, Crystal and Roasted Malts, Chinook, Willamette, East Kent Goldings Hops // PRICE POINT: $12 | 1x 22oz bottle //
